Unconformities, 03, 04, 10, 11 October - An exhibition of my latest work at the Coburg House
An unconformity is a geological feature displaying unexpected shifts in direction in the strata laid down over deep time. It's also a perfect description of this exhibition of new, science-inspired textiles by Madeleine Shepherd. Expect aperiodic tiles, computational kimonos and a celebration of James Hutton's 300th birthday.
Hutton was born in Edinburgh in 1726. Considered the father of modern geology, he was also an agriculturalist, chemical manufacturer, naturalist and physician. Madeleine has knitted Hutton's portrait in naturally dyed yarns, referencing his studies in the production of madder root for dyeing wool. Wall hangings and 3D pieces embody ideas and observations from Hutton's geological work on unconformities in the Edinburgh and East Lothian landscape.
Other new pieces include a pullover embodying a recent discovery in the mathematics of tessellations and wearable items incorporating patterns generated by cellular automata.
Madeleine will be on hand throughout the exhibition to discuss the ideas behind the work.
